Miguel Barnet - WikipediaEsteban Mesa Montejo — was a Cuban slave who escaped to freedom before slavery was abolished on the island in He lived as a maroon in the mountains until that time. He also served in the war of independence in Cuba. He is known for having his biography published in , in both Spanish and English, several years before his death and when he was already more than years old. After being featured in a newspaper article, Montejo had been contacted in by Cuban ethnologist Miguel Barnet , who conducted a series of taped interviews with him. From these, he published a book about Montejo's life.

Known as an expert on Afro-Cuban culture, he studied sociology at the University of Havana, under Fernando Ortiz , the pioneer of Cuban anthropology. He had escaped and lived as a maroon before slavery was abolished in Cuba. Barnet's style of testimonial in this work became a standard for ethnography in Latin America. This literary background has informed Barnet's approach and works of anthropological writing. In college, Barnet studied anthropology and sociology at the University of Havana. The professor introduced Barnet to an ethnographic model centered on indigenous religion, creole language, and the oral tradition. It emphasized study of the socially and economically marginalized class.
