Animal Farm is an allegorical novella reflecting events leading up to the Russian Revolution of and then on into the Stalinist era of the Soviet Union. Orwell, a democratic socialist, was a critic of Joseph Stalin and hostile to Moscow-directed Stalinism. In the book, Old Major, the old boar on the Manor Farm, summons the animals on the farm together for a meeting, during which he refers to humans as "enemies" and teaches the animals a revolutionary song called "Beasts of England". When Major dies, two young pigs, Snowball and Napoleon, assume command and consider it a duty to prepare for the Rebellion. The animals revolt, driving the drunken, irresponsible farmer Mr Jones, as well as Mrs Jones and the other human caretakers and employees, off the farm, renaming it "Animal Farm". They adopt the Seven Commandments of Animalism, the most important of which is, "All animals are equal".

Writing in The Guardian earlier this month, Christopher Hitchens revisited Animal Farm , George Orwell's "dystopian allegorical novella" that took aim at the corruption of the Soviet Union and its totalitarian rule. But, as Hitchens reminds us, Animal Farm was almost never published. It eventually came to see the light of day, but, 65 years later, Animal Farm still can't be legally read in China, Burma and North Korea, or across large parts of the Islamic world. But, no matter where you come from, you can listen to Animal Farm for free. That's right, I said it — free.

Animal Farm is a classic. It is hard to believe that when the book was written, George could not find a publisher. Now his book is on most High schools reading lists. Of course, this topic area is also what attracted schools to make it a staple in their curriculum. Enough of the history lesson let us get into the meat of the novel. Jones his men and some farm animals.
