What Is a Novel? Definition and Characteristics

Novel , an invented prose narrative of considerable length and a certain complexity that deals imaginatively with human experience, usually through a connected sequence of events involving a group of persons in a specific setting. Within its broad framework, the genre of the novel has encompassed an extensive range of types and styles: picaresque , epistolary , Gothic , romantic , realist, historical —to name only some of the more important ones. The novel is a genre of fiction , and fiction may be defined as the art or craft of contriving, through the written word, representations of human life that instruct or divert or both. The various forms that fiction may take are best seen less as a number of separate categories than as a continuum or, more accurately, a cline, with some such brief form as the anecdote at one end of the scale and the longest conceivable novel at the other. When any piece of fiction is long enough to constitute a whole book, as opposed to a mere part of a book, then it may be said to have achieved novelhood. But this state admits of its own quantitative categories, so that a relatively brief novel may be termed a novella or, if the insubstantiality of the content matches its brevity , a novelette , and a very long novel may overflow the banks of a single volume and become a roman-fleuve , or river novel.

Elements of a Novel

What is the difference between form and structure?

A novel is a relatively long work of narrative fiction , normally written in prose form, and which is typically published as a book. The present English word for a long work of prose fiction derives from the Italian novella for "new", "news", or "short story of something new", itself from the Latin novella , a singular noun use of the neuter plural of novellus , diminutive of novus , meaning "new". This sort of romance is in turn different from the genre fiction love romance or romance novel. Other European languages do not distinguish between romance and novel: "a novel is le roman , der Roman , il romanzo , en roman. The novel constitutes "a continuous and comprehensive history of about two thousand years", [7] with its origins in classical Greece and Rome , in medieval and early modern romance , and in the tradition of the Italian renaissance novella.

A Novel is a long narrative work of fiction with some realism. It is often in prose form and is published as a single book. Similar to a short story , a novel has some features like a representation of characters, dialogues, setting , plot , climax , conflict , and resolution. However, it does not require all the elements to be a good novel. There are many types of novels. They include mysteries, thrillers, suspense , detective, science fiction, romantic, historical, realist or even postmodern.

A novel is a narrative work of prose fiction that tells a story about specific human experiences over a considerable length. Prose style and length, as well as fictional or semi-fictional subject matter, are the most clearly defining characteristics of a novel. Unlike works of epic poetry, it tells its story using prose rather than verse ; unlike short stories , it tells a lengthy narrative rather than a brief selection. There are, however, other characteristic elements that set the novel apart as a particular literary form. For the most part, novels are dedicated to narrating individual experiences of characters , creating a closer, more complex portrait of these characters and the world they live in. Inner feelings and thoughts, as well as complex, even conflicting ideas or values are typically explored in novels, more so than in preceding forms of literature.

understanding literary form

At first thought, the difference between form and structure can seem very fine, and it may be that at times they overlap, but there is certainly a difference. Form is concerned with ideas of genre that surround a text, as well as the 'form,' or type, of the text itself, as in, whether it is a poem, play, novel. It might also include how something appears on a page, the physical form for example, as well as the paragraphs, or stanzas we see before us, the physical organisation of the text. Whilst in poetry, it may even be thought to encompass things such as rhyme scheme, although it may also be thought that this concerns structure too. However, when analysing structure in a text, we are looking for things such as: foreshadowing; repetition; analepsis and prolepsis; paragraph and sentence structure.

Literary Form In these pages, The Muse Of Literature explores authors and works that are strongly associated with specific forms of literature. Examples of authors and works of literature characterized by their form are novelists, short story writers, literary dramatists, poets, essayists, and their principal works. The Muse also explores issues and questions related to the subject of literary form. In this feature, The Muse has two primary objectives: 1 to explore works of literature classified by form, 2 to explore issues and questions that arise in connection with literary form. In this feature, The Muse is only interested in forms that appear in literary compositions. What does it take for a written work to qualify as a literary composition? 1. When analysing and responding to a text, look at how a writer uses form, structure and language and think about the effect they have on the reader.
