John Flanagan's induction into writing was unusual. While working at an agency, he wrote a scathing poem about a top-level executive. Luckily for him, one of the other executives agreed with his thoughts, thought he had talent and trained him in copywriting. After working in advertising for years, he teamed up with a friend and they created Hey Dad! Flanagan's popular Ranger's Apprentice series was originally twenty short stories that he had written for his son to enjoy reading.
