Founded by Dominican friars shortly after , the year of their arrivaI in Florence, the pharmacy used medicinal herbs grown in the monastic gardens to make medications, balms and pomades for the monks' infirmary. In When news of the quality of the products produced by the pharmacy reached the outside world, it was decided to open to the public. In Thanks to the excellence of the formulae developed by the apothecary fathers, during the 18th century the fame of the pharmacy spread across national borders to reach such distant lands as Russia, the Indies and even China. In Following the confiscation of the church's assets by the Italian government, in the company became a state owned enterprise. Later however it was ceded to Cesare Augusto Stefani, the nephew of the last monastic director, whose family acquired the name, the goodwill and the assets of the company and has since run the business for over four generations. The Old Apothecary, now a herbalist's shop, was used for the sale and display of products between and , while the historic Sales Room, restructured in , was the place in which the company's customers were welcomed when the increasing fame of the pharmacy made the provision of a room for entertaining customers a must. When I was in my college years, I spent a lot of time in Florence Italian boyfriends , and always wanted to go into the Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella aka the Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy, with all of its gorgeous soaps, perfumes, and creams—with the most beautiful packaging ; but I was afraid that it was way too expensive for my super-tight budget. I finally made it there last year, when we were producing our story on Pitti , and was lucky to be given a tour by Gianluca Foa, the chief commercial officer for the brand. Then we headed into the museum, where we saw some of the first stills that were used to distill the Acqua di Rose, which was used as a disinfectant and remedy during the 15th-century plague, and is still being made today; there was also a large collection of majolica pharmacy jars—gorgeous, and apparently one of the most comprehensive collections in Tuscany. After working our way through the ancient rooms, we made it to the 20th century, where we fell in love with all the clever packaging—especially for old beard tonics and anti-hysteria water. After that tour, we headed out to their factory, where they make almost all the preparations by hand. We saw them putting on the labels by hand, stuffing boxes by hand…everything…fatta a mano!

Santa Maria Novella. SKU: One of the world's great fragrances, this classic cologne with a citrus base, was created for Catherine de Medici, who, when she went to France to marry Henry II, brought her personal perfume-maker with her. There are various versions of the legend which explain how the "Acqua della Regina" Water of the Queen came to be commercialized as a cologne. Still hand-formulated in Florence, this remarkably light and fresh scent combines the provocative citrus and bergamot with subtle white flowers and deeply exotic spices. Spray pump sold separately.

I went to see a historic pharmacy and found a commercial, modern store with terrible customer service. If you took the time to find the back room, you could see historic items in cabinets with no explanation and no one to tell you about the history of the pharmacy. Staff stood at their counters and were not helpful. Overpriced and over hyped! If you arrive by train in Florence you will inevitably pass Santa Maria Novlla church. The pharmacy is round the corner from the church and it is certainly worth taking 30 minutes to visit it. My wife and I have visited it twice and really love it.

  1. Introducing the store to the Irish market are Marija Aslimoska, the classically French-trained perfumer and Brendan Coyle, who brought the immensely successful Parfumarija, the first independent niche perfumery to Ireland.
