Thank You for Your Service by David Finkel

The wars of the past decade have been covered by brave and talented reporters, but none has reckoned with the psychology of these wars as intimately as the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Finkel. For The Good Soldiers , his bestselling account from the front lines of Baghdad, Finkel embedded with the men of the Infantry Battalion during the infamous "surge," a grueling fifteen-month tour that changed them all forever. In Finkel's hands, readers can feel what these young men were experiencing, and his harrowing story instantly became a classic in the literature of modern war. Once again, he has embedded with some of the men of the —but this time he has done it at home, here in the States, after their deployments have ended. He is with them in their most intimate, painful, and hopeful moments as they try to recover, and in doing so, he creates an indelible, essential portrait of what life after war is like—not just for these soldiers, but for their wives, widows, children, and friends, and for the professionals who are truly trying, and to a great degree failing, to undo the damage that has been done. The story Finkel tells is mesmerizing, impossible to put down. With his unparalleled ability to report a story, he climbs into the hearts and minds of those he writes about.

Thank You for Your Service by David Finkel – review

No journalist has reckoned with the psychology of war as intimately as David Finkel. In Thank You for Your Service , Finkel follows many of those same men as they return home and struggle to reintegrate—both into their family lives and into American society at large. Thank You for … More…. Thank You for Your Service is an act of understanding, and it offers a more complete picture than we have ever had of two essential questions: When we ask young men and women to go to war, what are we asking of them? And when they return, what are we thanking them for? Two years later: Adam drops the baby.

It is a world dominated by an elemental loneliness. This is not — nor should it be — an easy book. But it is an essential one. Finkel refuses to gild the misery and ugliness of the last decade and the unpoetic aftermath of war with the kind of sentimentality that has so often clouded our thinking, not only about our military commitments but also about the veterans they produce. The book is all the more powerful for its detachment. Finkel champions the cause of those who are not O.

English Book Review- Thank You For Your Service

D avid Finkel's The Good Soldiers is one of the great works of literature to have come out of the war in Iraq. The reason for this is simple — and related to Wilfred Owen's claim that he was "not concerned with Poetry". Any literary merit the book possessed, Finkel insisted in an interview, was due to strict adherence to the principles of reporting. A given sentence reported a fact, the next sentence another fact, and so on. As we follow a battalion of soldiers through their deployment in Baghdad in , there emerges a devastating narrative of hope, heroism, futility a word Owen embedded forever in the lexicon of war and unimaginable horror.

The following version of the book was used to create this study guide: Finkel, David. Thank You for Your Service. Sarah Crichton Books, Oct. In his book Thank You For Your Service, David Finkel follows the challenges that face soldiers and their families once they return home from overseas deployments. The author focuses on those suffering with post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury, the invisible wounds of war. Finkel explores the pain of a widow dealing with the loss of her husband and the despair of families whose service members come home angry and violent.

  1. Some books just sneak up on you and you're never the same after. I'd heard very little about David Finkel's Thank You For Your Service before reading it, and I.
