Best Children's Books about World War II () ( books)

During the period itself writers of all kinds documented its impact in both public and private forms, through newspaper reports, propaganda items, works of literary ambition and expressions of personal experience. Painters, illustrators and photographers also bent their skills to the task. Both during and after the war for about twenty-five years poems and novels attempted to distil diverse areas of an experience that, for the soldiers in the trenches, was the most shattering and also the profoundest that they had had or would ever have. Some of the finest English poetry of the twentieth century stems from this personal experience. Though French and German writing of high quality also emerged from the war, it does not have a comparable weight in the literatures of France and Germany.

Two are non-fiction books written by people who lived through the events they describe. Whatever your children's ages, you'll need to explain a little bit about the Second World War in terms that they'll understand before you start reading. Even if your children are reading these books on their own, it's a good idea to read them yourselves and to have a bit of a chat about them afterwards. Asking your child what he or she thinks about the story gives them an opportunity to clarify their thoughts and gives you a chance to extend their knowledge and answer any questions they may have. If you're reading these books aloud, it's a good idea to give your kids a sort of broad-brush picture of what happened before you start reading. You don't have to go into lots of detail and, of course, tailor your explanation to the age of your child but do try to set the scene for them.

I also want to recommend Pied Piper by Neville Shute, which was actually written during the war and is about an elderly Englishman who becomes responsible for a growing group of children as he tries to escape from the German invasion of France in I read it as a child, and it left a deep impression. The Machine Gunners by Robert Westall — still one of the best books for children about the second world war. Geordie lad Chas McGill adds the ultimate trophy to his collection of war souvenirs — a working machine gun from a crashed German bomber….
