A Wizard of Earthsea: The Earthsea Cycle, Book 1 Book ReviewThe novels belong to the high fantasy genre and follow a young boy from the discovery of his magecraft through to him becoming the greatest mage of all time. Although this is a book that can be read and enjoyed by children and adults, its themes are far more adult than say, The Chronicles of Narnia or the Harry Potter series. Ged, the young boy who becomes a mage is central to all four sagas and his choices dictate the stories direction. One such key moment occurs early in his training, shortly after he has been taken under the wing of Ogion, his mentor and friend. Ged has become frustrated with his perceived lack of progress and Ogion offers him these following words of wisdom. You are very, very young to make this choice, but I cannot make it for you. If you wish, I will send you to Roke Island, where all high arts are taught.
EBR (76): A Wizard of Earthsea (Earthsea #1) by Ursula Le Guin
The Earthsea Quartet by Ursula Le Guin
Le Guin. It is a very good novel and an especially good fantasy novel. I faked the report by reading information about the book and its themes online. I struggled with reading and wanted nothing to do with it until my early 20s. Revisiting the novel and actually reading it felt as if I was giving it the justice it deserves. A Wizard of Earthsea is, as the name implies, the story of a wizard in the fictional world of Earthsea.
A Wizard of Earthsea is a simple but beautiful and magical coming-of-age story of a young wizard Ged, who starts out as a brash and cocky boy who in his arrogance unwittingly releases a terrible Shadow upon the world, but who eventually grows up and succeeds in embracing the da. A Wizard of Earthsea is a simple but beautiful and magical coming-of-age story of a young wizard Ged, who starts out as a brash and cocky boy who in his arrogance unwittingly releases a terrible Shadow upon the world, but who eventually grows up and succeeds in embracing the darker part of himself. A word of caution if you are expecting a traditional fantasy adventure - it is, more than anything, an introspective book, so be warned. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. Long before Harry Potter came along, Ursula Le Guin's A Wizard of Earthsea imagined what a school for wizards would be like. Interestingly, Le Guin, who became a noted feminist, initially confines wizardry to boys and men, with witches being mistrusted as weak and wicked.

Ged, its hero, will become the Archmage of a world in which magic is as common as electricity, but this is a tale from before that time. Ged, a poor smith's son, is born with a huge talent that he uses to save his village from invaders, but his gifts make him arrogant and impatient. At wizard school, he makes one friend and one enemy, and in a duel summons a monster that scars him and sends him on a deadly quest across the lonely seas full of peril. With the moral, intellectual and supernatural power to outwit dragons, resist evil, change weather and transform himself into a hawk, he is apparently defenceless against an enemy who increasingly takes on his appearance to trick or kill him. Throughout my life, I have drawn on this, particularly when suffering from depression.
