Grapes of Wrath is the third episode of the first series of the British sitcom, Black Books. It originally aired on the 13th of October, The script was written by Dylan Moran and Graham Linehan , who also directed the episode. The episode opens with a pre-credits scene in a monastery in Bordeaux, , in which one of the monks Ben Homewood rushes to his abbott Paul Beech , informing him that a bunch of grapes have grown from a rose thorn. They decide to make a wine from the grapes, which they say "will be fit for the Holy Father himself".

The show spans 18 episodes over three series. The original 45 minute pilot , recorded in , has not been broadcast and all other episodes were approximately 25 minutes long. Moran has stated that there will be no more episodes  and The Times reported the series has been "killed off". The show's pilot was decidedly darker, revolving around Bernard's, and later Manny's, decision to commit suicide. It featured Manny surname Zimmerman in reference to Bob Dylan as a professional depression-o-gram, and the Fran character as Valerie, a philosophy lecturer.
