Fall On Your Knees

Ann-Marie MacDonald

Ann-Marie MacDonald, somehow, managed to write a novel that had me immediately addicted and unable to walk away. I thought about this book between sittings and for months after reading it. I suppose what struck me the most was that I was unable to predict their behaviours the way I usually can with other novels. I would be lying if I said that I could relate to these characters and am completely honest in saying that I am happy about that. However, I feel that MacDonald is able to touch people through her universal theme of family dynamics. We all have our ideas about who we are and who we want to be, but once we enter the realm of the family, things get confusing. She and James have a really strong relationship and while she is at home with him, she is quite positive that her purpose in life is to become a world-famous opera singer.

The novel takes place in late 19th and early 20th centuries and chronicles four generations of the complex Piper Family. - I'm getting pretty fed up of the antics of the Piper family.

Winner of the Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best First Book, it was a national bestseller in Canada for two years, and it has been translated into 17 languages. And so, from early on, Ann-Marie MacDonald establishes some major themes: racial tension, isolation, passion and forbidden love, which will gradually lead to incest, death in childbirth, and even murder. At the centre of this epic story is the nature of family love, beginning with the Piper sisters who depend on one another for survival. And then there is James, their flawed father. Fall On Your Knees is probably the most intricately and exquisitely plotted book in Canadian literature. Yes, it is a wild ride. The second time, the book read the way my favourite symphonies sound.

The Piper family is steeped in secrets, lies, and unspoken truths. At the eye of the storm is one secret that threatens to shake their lives -- even destroy them. Set on stormy Cape Breton Island off Nova Scotia, Fall on Your Knees is an internationally acclaimed multigenerational saga that chronicles the lives of four unforgettable sisters. Theirs is a world filled with driving ambition, inescapable family bonds, and forbidden love. Compellingly written, by turns menacingly dark and hilariously funny, this is an epic tale of five generations of sin, guilt, and redemption. Get a FREE e-book by joining our mailing list today!
