The Hollows series also called the Rachel Morgan series is a series of thirteen mystery novels, eight short stories , two graphic novels , and one compendium resource by Kim Harrison , published by HarperCollins Publishers , in an urban fantasy alternate history universe and set primarily in the city of Cincinnati and its suburbs. The alternate history is built upon two premises: the recent open existence of magical and supernatural species , primarily witches , vampires , and werewolves , with the human population; and the historical investment of Cold War military spending in genetic engineering as opposed to the Space Race , which resulted in the accidental release of a genetically modified tomato in the s that killed a significant portion of the human population. The series is set approximately forty years after this plague, referred to as 'The Turn' within the series. The series also focuses on Rachel's relationships with her partners, a living vampire and a pixy , as well as her personal relationships with males of different species. Each of the main Hollows novels are written first-person from the perspective of Rachel Morgan exclusively. A year-old witch-born, day-walking demon. She is an equal partner in the 'Vampiric Charms' freelance runner and security service that she founded with Ivy Tamwood a living vampire and Jenks a pixy , all formerly with the vampire-run federal Inderland Security IS police service, although they now frequently work in collaboration with the human-run Federal Inderland Bureau FIB on special projects.

Suddenly, the humans are outnumbered and the different species are left vying for power. In addition to the modern not-quite-kickass heroine, the Hollows series expanded the urban fantasy multiverse to include demons and elves, pixies and gargoyles, and a complex balance of power that, eleven books in, has yet to be unraveled. Relationships also became a big part of the urban fantasy story in this series—Rachel is not a loner but has a full cast of friends, partners, and sometimes-allies with which to interact. Rachel is an urban fantasy heroine, so naturally her childhood had some imperfections—most importantly, a potentially fatal disease and some genetic experimentation, which have had an ever-increasing influence on the rest of her life. Throughout the series, Rachel is constantly torn between her white-witch good side and her dark-witch demonic side, with the dark side slowly growing in influence no matter how hard she fights it. Each time Rachel uses dark demon magic, more smut gets added to her aura. Para-bounty hunter, witches, Inderlanders non-humans , vampires, demons, weres, warlocks, wizards, para-detectives, pixies, faeries, gargoyle, elves, banshees, banshee tears, earth-witch, ley lines, shape-changing assassins, creatures, ancient evil, ancient artifact, crime lord, vampire drug, purgatory, black magic, underworld, apocalypse, dark arts, ley line, elven tycoon, gods, pack, savage beasts, ancient knowledge.

  1. Rachel is here, as are Jenks the pixie, elven tycoon Trent Kalamack, and an unholy host of vampires, demons, shapeshifters, ghosts, and other assorted supernatural beings, friends and foes.
