Well, as you may know, my other half works in the car industry and has done for over 20 years — he paints cars for a living. Some of the cars he works on are utterly ridiculous — Ferraris and Aston Martins mostly -but these are cars that are worth hundreds of thousands of pounds and so his experience with painting really comes in handy when it comes to DIY. And this, my friends, is the secret to painting Ikea furniture or any laminate for that matter — that thin layer that sits BETWEEN the primer and your laminate. Think of it as a primer for your primer.
The Secret to Painting IKEA Furniture
Built-in Billy bookcases are certainly not a new concept, but I never felt like the directions were close enough to what I needed. Enter my friend Kate. She gave some more details about the project, and I knew I was sold. One less thing for me to ponder for hours. After measuring the width of my wall, I knew I needed 4 bookcases. Once they were built and I had painted the backs of them, they were ready to be installed.
There's so much to love about Ikea! The prices are awesome, especially when you are trying to decorate your home on a budget like me. And a lot of Ikea pieces are stylish and durable. But there is one problem—there are times when you want furniture that isn't white…or black-brown…or walnut veneer. Am I right?!
It was surprisingly difficult because without the dresser in front of you, the paint chips closest to its actual colour look way off! Who knew the IKEA white is actually very cream rather than white? I pulled out one of the drawers from the dresser and started setting up paint chips on it. I started with the Benjamin Moore paint chips:. And then holding the swatches up to the dresser drawer the photo directly above you can compare the closest match, which is Clear Moon PWN Definitely closer than any of the Benjamin Moore colours, in my opinion. And then I remembered that all of these hardware stores can do colour matching!

When I walked through this house for the first time last summer, I immediately envisioned a wall of custom bookshelves in this room. But after gutting the entire first floor of the house last summer, and spending the past year rebuilding it, I had definitely run out of steam. And money. But not to worry! The next best thing was just one IKEA trip away. This built-in Billy bookcase project gave me an affordable way to create a custom-cabinetry feel for our home library. I had seen many an IKEA Billy bookcase hack out in the blogosphere, so I knew how good those composite and laminate shelves could look after a little dressing up.
A few secret projects up my sleeve. Anyway, I decided to do the hard work for you and take a piece of the furniture into Sherwin Williams so they can color match it up and get the correct paint formula. And here is the formula so you can just show them this at Sherwin Williams and they can mix it up for you. I chose latex, but you could do oil-based if you want as well. They are actually kind of creamy whites too. This will be great for touch ups to your IKEA furniture, and if you ever want to do any of those crazy furniture hacks! Perfect timing as I am going to be painting a few pieces in my daughters room to match her Ikea pieces!!

Removing the baseboards also allowed us to continue the trim around the bookshelves as well for a more custom look.
