Support for older people | SenseThe world we experience is not the real world. Which raises the question: How would our world change if we had new and different senses? Could they expand our universe? Technology has long been used to help people who have lost, or were born without, one of the five primary senses. For decades, some deaf people have worn cochlear implants , which use electrode arrays to stimulate the auditory nerve inside the ear. Researchers are working on other technologies that could restore sight or touch to those who lack it.
Beyond the Five Senses
The older we are, the more likely we are to have sight and hearing problems. In the UK, most people who have sensory impairments are older people who developed them in later life. If you are gradually losing your sight and hearing, you may not notice or understand exactly what is happening. You may start to struggle with daily life and find it harder to keep in touch or to get out and about. When a friend or family member starts to have problems with their sight and hearing, you might notice them withdrawing from social situations.
