Origins and Doctrine of Fascism - E-bok - Giovanni Gentile () | Bokus

The appearance of Chabod's book, however, suggests that some dis-cussion of the nature of Fascism may be timely. Although Fascism is one of the most familiar terms in our political vocabulary, it is hardly ever used in a way that suggests both an analytical grasp of its essential nature, and a real awareness of its autonomy as a category. Most writing either signally fails to advance beyond simple description of its external characteristics, or reduces it totally to its infrastructural base, effectively abdicating before its historical and concrete existence. The usual Marxist interpretation of Fascism in the inter-war period, despite serious attempts in certain cases to define the sociological conditions for its existence footnote 3 , was vitiated by one fatal false premise, the direct outcome of a mechanistic-evolutionary view of history. Fascism was seen as an inevitable, or typical stage in capitalist development. It is, of course, obvious that Fascism and the New Deal were attempts to salvage a capitalist economy in crisis by the creation of a dirigiste state.

The Doctrine of Fascism by Benito Mussolini

Fascism is a complex ideology. There are many definitions of fascism; some people describe it as a type or set of political actions, a political philosophy or a mass movement. Most definitions agree that fascism is authoritarian and promotes nationalism at all costs, but its basic characteristics are a matter of debate. Fascism is commonly associated with German Nazi and Italian regimes that came to power after World War I, though several other countries have experienced fascist regimes or elements of them. Robert Paxton, a professor emeritus of social science at Columbia University in New York who is widely considered the father of fascism studies, defined fascism as "a form of political practice distinctive to the 20th century that arouses popular enthusiasm by sophisticated propaganda techniques for an anti-liberal, anti-socialist, violently exclusionary, expansionist nationalist agenda. Other definitions, Paxton said, rely too heavily on documents that Mussolini, Hitler and others produced before they came to power.
