4 Things I Learned from The Magnolia Story by Chip & Joanna Gaines - I Restore Stuff

The couple has four children and besides filming their TV show, they run several businesses including their construction company, Magnolia Homes; Magnolia Home furniture and the Magnolia Market at the Silos, a shopping and dining destination in downtown Waco. Chip saw a magnolia tree on the side of the road and pulled over, ran to the tree, climbed it, pulled off one of the blooms and brought it back to me. It was the first flower he ever gave me, and I fell in love with magnolias after that. Now we plant one in the front yard of every job we finish to remember where we started. Read on for an excerpt from The Magnolia Story which reveals how Chip scared his wife in a big way one day. Spoiler alert: it has a happy ending.

To this day, I am still not sure what it was about Chip Gaines that made me give him a second chance — because, basically, our first date was over before it even started. I was working at my father's Firestone automotive shop the day we first met. I'd worked as my dad's office manager through my years at Baylor University and was perfectly happy working there afterward while I tried to figure out what I really wanted to do with my life. The smell of tires, metal, and grease — that place was like a second home to me, and the guys in the shop were all like my big brothers. On this particular afternoon, they all started teasing me. There's a hot guy out there. Go talk to him!

Fixer Upper may be over, but you definitely don't have to say goodbye to shiplap, subway tile, and barn doors —at least, not if Joanna Gaines has anything to do with it. The TV personality and author's first design book, Homebody: A Guide to Creating Spaces You Never Want to Leave , hit stores last fall, and it's chock full of dream homes, interior ideas, and plenty of modern-rustic farmhouse design. Complementing the gorgeous photography are insights and anecdotes from Joanna's storied career as a designer.

No, not really, but they were asking for hints. So my son caught the hint, and picked it up for me for Christmas. While with my sister-in-law in North Carolina, we stopped into the beautiful 70 West Home Furnishings store, where they stock a lot of Magnolia Home goods! I mean, can this couple get any cuter? From selling books to opening a fireworks stand and starting a lawn-mowing business, Chip had gained much business experience before eventually trying his hand at flipping houses. What I learned: if you want to be great at business, you have to be willing to dive in and make it happen — give it a go!
