Tao Te Ching - Wikipedia

In 81 short chapters, he presented the world according to Tao, the Way, and how mankind should adapt to it. The book has become one of the foremost world classics of wisdom - maybe even more relevant today, than it was to Lao Tzu's contemporaries. This translation of the text focuses on the clarity and simplicity by which Lao Tzu expresses his fascinating cosmology and profound ethics. This is an uncommented edition. As a historian of ideas, he studies the thought patterns in creation myths around the world.

The text's authorship, date of composition and date of compilation are debated. The Tao Te Ching , along with the Zhuangzi , is a fundamental text for both philosophical and religious Taoism. It also strongly influenced other schools of Chinese philosophy and religion , including Legalism , Confucianism , and Buddhism , which was largely interpreted through the use of Taoist words and concepts when it was originally introduced to China. Many artists, including poets , painters , calligraphers , and gardeners , have used the Tao Te Ching as a source of inspiration. Its influence has spread widely outside East Asia and it is among the most translated works in world literature. The first character can be considered to modify the second or can be understood as standing alongside it in modifying the third.
