Looking for some great picture books for teaching students to ask questions? This nonfiction book is set up in a question-and-answer format. This lends itself nicely to kids asking questions about what is happening, why things are happening, etc. Make sure to model a few of your own questions as you begin the story, so that students can come up with their own questions as time goes on. Creating Question and Answer Books through Guided Research

One important comprehension strategy we want to teach our kids is asking questions. Our curiosity compels us to find the answers. These texts are written in such a way that it makes kids want to ask questions. You can read more about asking questions over at The Measured Mom. The Empty Pot by Demi is a fantastic little book that teaches the value of honesty, but the author gets kids guessing along the way. What will happen when he goes before the Emperor? Perhaps my favorite way to use the book is to launch into a little science experiment on growing regular seeds vs.
I am very excited to share this unit with you. When I was planning this unit I decided to hone in on the author's craft and structure standards, making it a "double dose" of standards when we combined it with our poetry unit, since "Owl Moon" is a book written in rich prose, like poetry is written. I taught this unit in my reading block and taught my poetry unit in my writing block. I was excited that I could hone in on several different comprehension skills in this unit. Students will also have their written response packet where they have to actually write their questions.
