Children's Books By Brilliant Black Women: #OwnVoices Authors & Illustrators - Books For Littles

As a kid, growing up, there weren't many black characters in the books I coveted so much. However, kids today have a much larger selection of children's books to choose from with brown characters of all shades for them to identify with -- and most of them have been written by black authors, too. We've rounded up 21 children's books that every black kid needs to read or have read to them. And the talented writers behind these tales are nothing short of impressive, too, from the famous feminist bell hooks to Taye Diggs to Pharrell Williams. Add these books to your shelf, and get the kiddos ready for story time!

Some of the faces you will recognize, like Harriet Tubman and Maya Angelou, while others might be new to both you and your kids. Vashti Harrison's sweet illustrations accompany each biography. In this adorably illustrated book for early readers, debut author Sharee Miller celebrates the diversity of black hair. Although useful, these cultural and gender-themed book lists are often inadequate, restrictive, and in many ways stereotypical. As a NYC kindergarten and 1st grade teacher, I was very intentional about the books I chose to read to my students. Do you get this important distinction? Children will thank you for it later in life. Publishers must be committed to publishing books depicting non-white characters doing all sorts of things in all sorts of places. I think the publishing industry has too narrow a definition of market.
