King and Maxwell by David Baldacci

King and Maxwell are private investigators now. They have a knack for poking around for answers, and the alphabet agencies tend to get upset with their questions. While driving at night in the pouring rain, the duo almost hits a young boy named Tyler Wingo. He's upset because he's just learned his father has been killed in Afghanistan. They take Tyler to his home, where they see his mother, as well as the soldiers who brought the tragic news.

But then why did he receive an email from him after his father had supposedly been killed? Michelle Maxwell wants to take the case but Sean isn't convinced.

Sean King and Michelle Maxwell worked for the Secret Service but left under a cloud and are now working together as private investigators. Driving home from a client meeting on a stormy night in northern Virginia, they almost run down Tyler Wingo, a teenage boy. They find out that he has run away from home after hearing that his father was killed in Afghanistan. When they take him back to his house, they meet his stepmother, who seems quite unconcerned. The next day King and Maxwell hear from Tyler.
