Calculus with Analytic Geometry I
Calculus , originally called infinitesimal calculus or "the calculus of infinitesimals ", is the mathematical study of continuous change, in the same way that geometry is the study of shape and algebra is the study of generalizations of arithmetic operations. It has two major branches, differential calculus and integral calculus. Differential calculus concerns instantaneous rates of change and the slopes of curves. Integral calculus concerns accumulation of quantities and the areas under and between curves. These two branches are related to each other by the fundamental theorem of calculus. Both branches make use of the fundamental notions of convergence of infinite sequences and infinite series to a well-defined limit.
Calculus with Analytic Geometry presents the essentials of calculus with analytic geometry. The emphasis is on how to set up and solve calculus problems, that is, how to apply calculus. The initial approach to each topic is intuitive, numerical, and motivated by examples, with theory kept to a bare minimum. Later, after much experience in the use of the topic, an appropriate amount of theory is presented. Comprised of 18 chapters, this book begins with a review of some basic pre-calculus algebra and analytic geometry, paying particular attention to functions and graphs.
