5 Mind-Blowing Ways to Read “Of Mice and Men”

Published in , Of Mice and Men has long been a fixture of high school English curriculums. Author John Steinbeck used his own experience as a bindlestiff to tell the story of two migrant workers, one of whom is developmentally disabled, living and working in Depression-era California. Lenny and George dream of acquiring their own piece of land, but are thwarted by forces beyond their control. The book debuted to instant acclaim, and was soon adapted for the screen and stage. American Experience spoke to her about her experience. Why do you teach this book?

Of Mice and Men is a story of two migrant workers, George and Lennie, seeking opportunities on ranches in California during the Great Depression period. Lennie is large and strong but mentally disabled. He consistently gets the pair in trouble. He had childishly felt the soft dress of a woman on the ranch where they had been working triggering screams and accusations of rape. They had to flee before a mob captured them. I gotta tell you again, do I?

The book remains one of the most-assigned novels in the English language. Without reading a page you likely already know the characters of George—slim, smart, responsible—and Lennie—huge, stupid, and casually violent. Like all works of fiction, Of Mice and Men has several possible interpretations. Next time you read this classic, consider the following theories on what it really means. Finding homosexual characters in older works is thus a matter of close reading and interpretation. On the other hand, George often admires his fellow men, noting their physical strength and features with lush detail.

BANNED: Of Mice and Men

Of Mice and Men is a novella written by John Steinbeck. Steinbeck based the novella on his own experiences working alongside migrant farm workers as a teenager in the s before the arrival of the Okies that he would describe in The Grapes of Wrath. While it is a book taught in many schools, [3] Of Mice and Men has been a frequent target of censors for vulgarity, and what some consider offensive, ableist and racist language; consequently, it appears on the American Library Association 's list of the Most Challenged Books of 21st Century. Two migrant field workers in California on their plantation during the Great Depression—George Milton, an intelligent but uneducated man, and Lennie Small, a bulky, strong man but mentally disabled —are in Soledad on their way to another part of California. They hope to one day attain the dream of settling down on their own piece of land. Lennie's part of the dream is merely to tend and pet rabbits on the farm, as he loves touching soft animals, although he always kills them. This dream is one of Lennie's favorite stories, which George constantly retells.
