As you might expect, the feelings of being abandoned stayed with Angelou for years and ten years passed before they met again. She talks about how love shifts and is redefined in a relationship shaped by this kind of separation and pain.

She tells the story of Vivian Baxter Johnson, the first black woman officer in the Merchant Marines, who for the first 13 years of Angelou's life was barely a mother at all. Angelou finds just the right words to explain why her parents' marriage failed: "They were matches and gasoline. When the occasional present arrived from their unknown mother, they smashed it to pieces. However, even having to face memories like these, this inspiring book describes how, against the odds, mother and daughter eventually built an incredible bond. It begins when, aged 13, a reluctant Angelou is sent to live with her mother.
