Pride and Prejudice is set in rural England in the early 19th century, and it follows the Bennet family , which includes five very different sisters. Today, readers tend to regard the novel primarily as a love story between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy. Beatrice is a witty and independent-minded woman who despises men and marriage. However, the reviewer sees Pride and Prejudice as having a purpose that goes beyond social and psychological realism. Jane Austen fills her novels with ordinary people, places and events, in stark contrast to other novels of the time.
