I really agree with this review, though sadly its one of the few critical of Hosoda's work: its seems pretty sad that Miyazaki is getting replaced with a conservative who seems to be now under the influence of the Abe-era film motto of "Don't say anything truly negative about Japan. Plenty of Japanese people online have also criticized the same aspects of the film you criticized. They think Kaede and Ren's father were unnecessary, the entire second half in fact. Also, Ren's backstory is hardly explained: Why did his parents divorce? They seem like good people, too good in fact.
